DECORTECH Arena | Hall B5-D5

The quality of interiors has evolved significantly, above all thanks to the performance of surface and cladding materials. For designers, it is increasingly important to understand the structural and technological potential of new materials — because innovation and design always go hand in hand.

The discussion features:

  • Armando Bruno, CEO, Studio Marco Piva

Material as a Language of Design

Today, materials and surfaces represent fundamental tools in shaping architectural identity. Beyond their technical performance, they help define the perception, atmosphere, and quality of spaces, becoming central elements in the dialogue between innovation, sustainability, and design expression.

  • Henza Sabry, Distance Studio Consultants Board Member

Materials are the foundation of meaningful design. This presentation explores how carefully selected textures, finishes, and surfaces can shape the identity, functionality, and emotional experience of a space, transforming materials into powerful design tools that enhance creativity, innovation, and performance.

  • Mario Bisson, Associate Professor, Department of Design, Politecnico di Milano

The presentation by Prof. Mario Bisson, Associate Professor in the Department of Design at the Politecnico di Milano, offers a reflection on the role of surfaces as perceptual, sensory, and design interfaces capable of influencing well-being, user experience, and the quality of contemporary spaces. Drawing on the latest research in CMF Design (Color, Material, Finishing), color culture, and multisensory perception, the talk will explore the relationships between materials, finishes, light, and human behavior, highlighting how surfaces are no longer merely technical or decorative elements, but rather devices capable of generating meaning, emotions, and identity. The presentation will showcase research experiences developed within the Color Laboratory and the EDME (Environmental Design and Multisensory Experience) Laboratory at the Politecnico di Milano, fostering a dialogue between industrial innovation, academic research, and design applications. This will be an opportunity to explore new perspectives on surface design for both interior and exterior environments, with particular attention to the integration of aesthetic quality, sensory performance, and the sustainability of the overall experience.
